Video Game Consoles

Gaming Consoles and Setups I've Owned For At Least Some Time in the Recent Past to Present

Over the course of many many years, I've developed a fondness to some video games. But few games (or few genres of games) captivated my attention more than racing games or otherwise car-related games. However, I have tried other games (and some from other game platforms and developers). This page is for my console collection, so it won't be reviews of my game collection.

PlayStation 2

Sony's Innovative Grand Machine for the 21st Century!

I have very fond memories of the PS2 in its hayday (and I still play on it from time to time to this day). The first few games I've ever played in it back when were mainly PS1 games, thanks to its backwards compatibility. The first PS2 games I played were ATV Offroad Fury 2 and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2. The PS2 is where I first experienced Gran Turismo. And after that, there was no looking back...

PlayStation 3

My first online experience

In my opinion, this generation of video games had reached peak graphical fidelity and free online multiplayer. This also meant an overlap between traditional physical media and the advent of digital connectivity. From here going forward, downloadable content (DLC) would be a great selling point for many games. The PS3 may be backwards compatible, but only with PS1 game disks.

Other Consoles

PlayStation

The original Playstation I had back in the '90s. The radical technology of the day was the compact disk (CD) format which could play 32-bit graphics. Before CD's, video games existed in cartridge format. My original favourites included Namco Museum, Crash Bandicoot, and Test Drive 5. While I no longer have a PS1 console (it's been years!), I can still play PS1 disks on my backwards compatible PS2.

Gameboy Advance

While not backlit, I still somewhat fancied the "pixely" aesthetic of the GBA's liquid crystal display (LCD). Since the GBA was my first foray into handheld gaming (outside of mobile games), my game library was modest. Probably the most played on there was... surprise, surprise, Crash Bandicoot 2: N-Tranced!. This was "Crash Bandicoot 2" in name only, but had the feel of PS1's Warped. I also tried getting into Pokemon, but to little avail.

Nintendo DS Lite

Double the screens, double the fun!

Now THIS was the one Nintendo handheld I spent quite the minute on! This time around, I sank myself into mainly (or else entirely) first-party Nintendo games. Super Mario 64 DS and Mario Kart DS were my favourite casual games, and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days was my favourite adventure game. As for the handheld device itself, it was a revised version of the original DS (separated by only two years). The more sleek ergonomic design was easier on the hands. I personally didn't see much need for the stylus, since I navigated menus and gameplay mostly with buttons.
